AMU Students & Staff Receive Top Honors at IAEM Annual Conference

Charles Town, W.Va. — With a strong contingent of students and staff in attendance, American Military University (AMU) received several top honors at the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) 57th Annual Conference in Orlando, FL. AMU is a member institution of American Public University System (APUS), which includes American Public University, and educates more than 50,000 adult learners worldwide.

AMU was named the 2009 recipient of the IAEM Academic Recognition Award for its undergraduate and graduate degree programs in emergency and disaster management. IAEM recognized AMU as the first online university to be accredited by the Foundation of Higher Education (FoHE) for Disaster and Emergency Management and Homeland Security and the active involvement of faculty with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Higher Education Initiative. Additionally, IAEM specifically noted AMU’s commitment to its military and civilian emergency management students.

AMU has the largest IAEM Student Chapter in the organization with 179 active members. This year, the AMU IAEM Student Chapter was recognized as the IAEM Student Chapter of the Year. The Chapter of the Year award is determined by nominations from other student chapters and recognizes the accomplishments and achievements of that chapter.

Reynolds, Ed.D.,Program Director for Emergency and Disaster Management and Fire Science Management at AMU. “AMU is dedicated to educating those who serve. The commitment our students and staff show to this program is a testament to the importance of maintaining high academic standards and timely information for our program.”

AMU students continued their dedication to the organization by being elected to top offices in the IAEM-USA Student Region. Jeannine “Jet” Holt, from Arkansas, was elected Secretary; Michael J. Kelley, from South Carolina, was elected 1st Vice President; and Nancy Harris, from Chicago, was elected President.

AMU congratulates students and staff for their dedication and commitment to Emergency and Disaster Management and their active participation in IAEM that made these awards and recognitions possible.
