Building and construction industry workers can learn how to prepare successful bids to build sensitive and secure buildings needed to house government agencies and homeland security companies relocating to the area as part of the federal Base Realignment and Closure initiatives through a series of courses offered this spring at Anne Arundel Community College.
The first course, “SCIF Overview,” $75, is a half-day course offered from 8 a.m.-noon Thursday, April 9 at AACC at Arundel Mills, 7009 Arundel Mills Circle, Hanover.
Alll the courses meet at AACC at Arundel Mills, are short and last between half a day and two days. They were developed in conjunction with the Industrial Security Awareness Council of Central Maryland to meet the specialized requirements of Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIF) construction and certification.
Four courses will be offered at AACC: “SCIF Construction Project Management” (8 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, May 7, $150); “SCIF Design and Contract Management” (8 a.m.-4 p.m. both Tuesday and Wednesday, May 19-20, $300); and “Retrofitting to SCIF Standards,” (4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 4, $75).
SCIFs are expected to be a key component of BRAC-related construction in Maryland. A SCIF is an accredited area, room, group of rooms, buildings or installation where sensitive, compartmented information may be stored, used, discussed and/or processed. These areas can have special walls, elaborate alarm systems and sound-masking technology.
Anyone who hopes to work on these projects could benefit from these courses, including construction contractors, subcontractors, architects, project managers, builders, developers and workers in the construction trades.
AACC is one of seven colleges in Maryland offering this training as part of a $100,000 Workforce ONE Maryland grant from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation as part of $4 million awarded to DLLR by the U.S. Department of Labor to help Maryland address workforce challenges created by BRAC.
