Application Instructions for Nominees to the National Biodefense Science Board

With five current National Biodefense Science Board (NBSB) voting members retiring from their appointments at the end of 2019, ASPR is seeking applications from qualified experts to serve three-year terms on the NBSB.  

For terms beginning on January 1, 2020, the Secretary of HHS will appoint one person representing the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and device industries; one person who is a  State, Local, Tribal or Territorial (SLTT) public health official; one person representing academia; and one person from an organization representing healthcare consumers. Applications/nominations for those positions will be accepted between April 15 and June 15, 2019.  

Members of the NBSB are appointed by the HHS Secretary based on their expertise in scientific, technical and other matters of special interest to HHS regarding current and future chemical, biological, nuclear, and radiological agents, whether naturally occurring, accidental, or deliberate.  NBSB board members should be available to travel for in-person, public meetings (mostly in Washington, DC) for 5-8 days per year (potentially more) and available for periodic conference calls (1-3 hours per month).  Board members may need to conduct work (individual reading or writing, for example) outside of organized meetings to be prepared to address agenda items and help to develop board reports. ASPR coordinates and funds only required travel for appointed voting members to attend periodic, in-person meetings.  

Application Process

Applicants to serve on the NBSB must submit their completed nomination package to ASPR by mail or at NBSB@hhs.gov by June 15, 2019 (midnight, eastern daylight-savings time).  Please use “2019 NBSB Voting Member Nomination” in the subject line of the email.

Required: Cover letter (limit 750 words please) addressed to:

In the cover letter, please included the following:

  • Summary of the nominee’s qualifications to serve on the NBSB, such as special training and/or experience in a medical specialty, biomedical research, industrial activities, public health preparedness, or emergency management;
  • Specify the expertise category(ies) [industry, academia, SLTT, or healthcare consumer organization] for which the nominee is qualified as a representative;
  • Summary of all prior Federal Advisory Committee service.

Attachments to the cover letter:

  • Required: Resume or curriculum vitae (limit six pages, please include daytime phone number and email address)
  • Optional: Letters of recommendation (limit two letters, 500 words each)
