Bruker Mobile Detection Unit E2M Highlighted on NBC Nightly News Broadcast

In a series titled Disaster in the Gulf, NBC correspondent Anne Thompson highlights the fact that the Obama administration's claims that the Oil in the Gulf has disappeared isn't accurate. Bruker Detection scientist Bob Kibler is shown using the E2M finding significant levels of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) and other hydrocarbons deposited in the mud, silt, and sand along the affected areas of the coastline.

These findings were determined at the same time that the Government agencies were proclaiming that 75% of the oil was gone. We cautioned NBC to further explore the issue with other labs and agencies to verify what we told them and they did. By analyzing in the field and getting fast results, we were first with the information that is now the “hot” topic in the media. That the “75% is gone” is probably not accurate is now being touted on all of the networks.

In another episode of the same series, the accuracy of the administration claims comes into question again leaving questions about where the oil is. Researcher's from the University of Georgia dispute the federal governments statements. Kibler is shown again finding Benzene levels of up to 1000 times higher than allowed in Louisiana's Four Bayou Pass.

E2M Enhanced Environmental Mass Spectrometer

  • The E2M is a mobile, compact and rugged GC/MS system for fast, reliable onsiteentification and quantification of organic substances in soil, air, water and from surfaces.
  • The E2M provided a full range of analytical capabilities to enable testing of a variety of materials in the field to include:
    • Air via Tenax Tubes
    • Air via direct air sampling
    • Water via headspace
    • Water via extraction
    • Water via modified purge & trap
    • Soils via extraction
    • Soils via headspace
  • The analytical range of the unit to test for volatile and semi-volatile chemicals make the E2M the instrument of choice for field analysis that requires the ultimate in flexibility and performance.
  • No support gases, no consumables for the GC/MS, and complete analytical flexibility provided researchers with the tools to quickly respond, quickly analyze, and quickly evaluate the situation to provide answers upon which consequential decisions could be made.
  • First on the scene, first with the data and results, first on the news.
