ST. LOUIS, Mo., — Clean Earth Technologies, LLC today announced that PERIDOX® solution with Electrostatic Decontamination System (EDS) is the first and only product approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to decontaminate Bacillus anthracis, more commonly known as anthrax. For the first time, the emergency-response community has an EPA-registered decontaminant that can be used for bioterrorism preparedness and response.
The cutting edge chemistry and delivery system developed by Clean Earth Technologies, LLC will drastically reduce the time needed to decontaminate surfaces and recover from an anthrax release.
Spores are killed when a very thin layer of PERIDOX® is sprayed onto the contaminated surface, which is then illuminated with a powerful ultraviolet (UV) light. The electrostatic spray wraps around complex surfaces, ensuring thorough coverage. When used as directed, PERIDOX® with EDS kills anthrax in seconds and meets the “6 log” EPA requirement for thorough decontamination of the surface.
The process leaves no toxic residue and has excellent material compatibility, even with most electronics and sensitive optical gear.
PERIDOX® itself also has positive implications for controlling emerging infectious diseases, like H1N1 “swine” flu, avian flu , C. difficile, MRSA, norovirus and many others.
“This dramatic step forward in bio-preparedness is the result of a long standing public/private partnership between Clean Earth Technologies and the Technical Support Working Group, an agency of the Department of Defense Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office,” said Dr. Joan Stader, director of Life Sciences, Clean Earth Technologies.
“After a decade of development, testing and regulatory review, we were able to achieve the first EPA-registered decontaminant specially designed for anthrax-attack preparedness,” said Dr. Jeff Golden, co-founder, Clean Earth Technologies. “This product will provide a great layer of strength to our national security and defense systems, especially in light of recent threats from Al Qaeda to smuggle anthrax into the U.S. from Mexico.”
A ready-to-use version of Peridox®, PeridoxRTU™ sporicidal disinfectant, which is an EPA-registered, non-chlorine-based disinfectant for C. difficile spores, will soon be available for use in hospitals and healthcare settings, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, day care centers, hotels, schools and other facilities to dramatically improve control of infectious disease, reduce incidence of hospital acquired infections and reduce the impact of drug-resistant pathogens and future outbreaks.
