CNA Corporation Names Timothy L. Beres President of the Institute for Public Research

Arlington, VA – CNA Corporation announced today that Timothy L. Beres, formerly vice president and director of its Safety and Security Division, will become the president of its Institute for Public Research (IPR), effective January 5, 2015. 

Reporting to CNA Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Robert J. Murray, Beres is responsible for overall executive management of the work in IPR, which meets the research and analysis needs of national leaders who address domestic policy issues in the areas of air traffic management; education; safety and security; energy, water, and climate; and other domestic issues. He is replacing VADM (USN, ret.) Lee F. Gunn, who is retiring from CNA after 14 years of service. 

“Lee has been a superb leader of IPR,” said Murray. “He created solid processes for managing our domestic business efficiently, and led the building of a thriving business in the Institute despite many challenges.  I thank Lee, and am grateful to Lee, for his distinguished service as president of IPR.

“I am pleased that Tim has accepted this appointment,” Murray continued. “His proven record of accomplishment, both at the Department of Homeland Security and here at CNA, is a real strength. His inspired leadership and dedication will serve all our IPR clients well, and he’ll continue as a strong role model for our CNA employees.” 

Beres joined CNA in 2006. As a former member of the Senior Executive Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, he was responsible for managing a $3 billion state and local preparedness assistance program that included grants and technical assistance.

Beres also worked in various senior management positions in the U.S. Department of Justice, and was a revenue officer for the State of North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Beres holds a bachelor’s degree in History from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Virginia.
