EnviroGuard Secures First UL Listing For Battery Spill Containment Systems
MONTCLAIR, CALIF. – EnviroGuard Compliance and Safety Solutions, which holds multiple patents on spill containment systems for stationary lead acid battery systems (SLABS) used in uninterruptible power and stand-by power systems at utility and telecommunications sites, today announced that Underwriters Laboratories has Listed their systems. To date, no other SLABS containment systems on the market are UL Listed. To obtain UL Listing, the EnviroGuard-manufactured system met all criteria and procedures of “UL Subject 2436 – Outline of Investigation for Spill Containment for Stationary Lead Acid Battery Systems.” EnviroGuard’s SLABS containment systems can be found in UL’s online certification directory at www.ul.com under the category code “VXMB.”On the UL Online Certification Directory in Category Code VXMB under General Information, it states – This category covers spill containment for stationary lead-acid battery systems investigated for liquid tightness and electrolyte pH neutralization capability in accordance with Chapter 52 of ANSI/NFPA 1, "Uniform Fire Code," and acid resistance in accordance with OSHA 1926.441(a)(4), "Battery Locations and Battery Charging." These systems are intended to provide a reliable means of containment for hazardous material liquids in the event of electrolyte leakage from stationary lead-acid battery systems. Requirements for spill detection, spill clean-up, containment dimensions, containment capacity, neutralizer capacity and ventilation are included in the applicable federal or local governing codes, such as Chapter 52 of ANSI/NFPA 1, and OSHA 1926.441.In order for a system to be Listed under UL’s category VXMB, it must also comply with a 1 flame spread criteria in accordance with NFPA 101, Life Safety Code. “By using test protocol ASTM-E648, and requiring a 1 rating, we are able to demonstrate that UL-listed SLABS will not propagate flames when exposed to fully involved fire conditions,” affirmed Underwriters Laboratories Fire Protection Engineer Bob Backstrom. “ 1 criteria require a critical flux for fire propagation of greater than 0.45 w/cm2 which is greater than the flux of a flashover condition typically described as 0.20 w/cm2. This test protocol stresses SLABS to double the energy level of flashover.”“This is especially good news for fire inspectors and departments, building inspectors, engineers, architects, insurers and standards groups who have been wanting a UL Listed solution for their data and telecom centers,” said Doug Frazier, President of EnviroGuard Compliance and Safety Solutions. “Given that Underwriters Laboratories has created a category for spill containment for SLABS and that there is a system that meets its requirements, this will give many people comfort and assurance that the system they are using meets third party safety standards. With their orders, customers will be sent a UL Conformance Certificate to post in their offices for presentation to inspectors.”Uninterruptible power is a vital part of many industries today – from data communications and telecommunications systems used in healthcare and banking to transportation and homeland security. This stand-by power is typically supplied by a back-up system of stationary lead-acid batteries. The Uniform Fire Code and many state and local ordinances require spill containment for these battery back-up systems. This is because in the event of an accident, there is the possibility of discharge of sulfuric acid from stationary lead acid batteries.
