GUARD Disaster Community Program Chooses Semandex Medical Emergency Network to let First Responders Access, Share Crucial Information

PRINCETON, NJ (June 6, 2006) — A real-time network application from Semandex Networks, Inc. that knows what information users need, finds it, and automatically routes it to them now enhances a wireless disaster response communications program created under the National Technology Alliance (NTA) with the ability to manage emergency medical information and provide it to first responders. The Semandex application is the Medical Emergency Disaster Response Network (MEDRN), which allows emergency agencies to respond faster and more effectively during a natural or man-made disaster.  MEDRN is being developed under grants (No. 1R43LM008474-01 and 2R44LM008474-02) from the National Library of Medicine, an agency of The National Institutes of Health.MEDRN features the revolutionary semantic networking technology developed by Semandex which allows first responders and other parties in an emergency to access, distribute, and share information located in local, state, and federal government facilities as well as on the Internet to the project to enable.MEDRN will operate over a two-way wireless communications network called GUARD (Geospatially-Aware Urban Approaches for Responding to Disasters), an NTA project led by Rosettex Technology & Ventures GroupTM. A demonstration of GUARD with the Semandex application will take place in St. Louis, MO on June 22.“Emergency response is a challenging environment because things happen very fast and there is so much information that has to be shared,” said Dan Reininger, president and CEO of Semandex. “GUARD’s infrastructure allows our MEDRN solution to provide crucial information to the people involved when they need it most.”David Ihrie, Chief Technology Officer for Rosettex, said “we have worked with Semandex for many years in the National Security arena, and we are delighted that they have joined the GUARD team.”During natural disasters or man-made emergencies MEDRN, working on top of GUARD’s WiMAX-ready wireless infrastructure, will provide emergency medical teams with information relevant to their specific roles, as well as information on the incident in general. This will let them respond faster, make better decisions in the field, and work more efficiently with other teams. In its first demonstration as a component of GUARD, MEDRN successfully demonstrated how emergency management commanders and first responders in the field could quickly access and share information about events, the availability of patient treatment resources such as hospital beds and services, the location of essential facilities, and medical guidelines on treatment of patients exposed to chemicals, among other things. Information Routed According to ContentMEDRN is an application of Semandex network technology, already in use in military and national security fields. A Semandex network adds content-based search to an existing information infrastructure, integrating knowledge sources and seekers. The network uses semantic tags to ify information based on content instead of search terms and URLs. This creates a “semantic Web,” where users exchange information based on its relevance to their needs, not on its IP address.Access is real-time, eliminating the risk of basing important decisions on older, cached information. The searches can cover internal and external databases, documents, and even human experts as well as the Internet. Users can exchange information without knowing beforehand who is sending or receiving it, since the network tracks each user’s needs.A Semandex network overlays current systems and can work through existing applications, essentially eliminating the user learning curve. It can scale up indefinitely by simply adding Semandex routers. The system is built around standards-based XML for maximum compatibility and interoperability.About Semandex™ NetworksSemandex™ Networks Inc. (www.semandex.net) provides standards-based solutions for the rapid delivery of information among distributed producers and consumers. Its systems are used in national defense and homeland security; enterprise information integration and knowledge management; and service industries such as healthcare, finance, and wireless. Semandex content-based networks enable enterprises to integrate vital information within and outside the organization faster and more cost-effectively.About the NTAThe National Technology Alliance (NTA) is a U.
