Hampton, Va. – Hampton University, in collaboration with Alion Science and Technology, has developed an online certificate program in homeland security. The new program affords participants and working professionals the opportunity to advance in the growing field of homeland security.  The program launches Oct. 22 and registration is currently in progress. HU and Alion developed the six-week online certificate program in response to the nation’s rapidly growing need for expertise in homeland security and threat management.  The program is aimed at aiding professionals including first responders, security personnel, city managers, transportation officials, and emergency planners in contributing to security efforts at a local, state or national level.   “The educational thrust is focused on real world events and solutions,” stated Teresa Walker, HU assistant provost of technology.  “This can give students a greater understanding of the issues and will provide a foundation for career growth.” The program consists of three 12-hour, non-credit courses: Homeland Security Fundamentals, Anti- and Counter Terrorism Strategic Objectives, and Threat Assessment and Risk Management Studies.   Students will gain an appreciation for the current threat environment, to include    commonly used tactics and procedures employed by terrorists.  Additionally, students will learn to execute successful security planning and threat assessment management.  It provides the unique opportunity to study with subject matter experts from the field, with decades-long real world experience in national security and critical infrastructure protection. “Alion has many years of experience in developing and delivering distance learning solutions,” said Don L.
