INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security and Emergency Management at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is now available entirely online for the first time this fall.
Designed for people who will work in all levels of government or with government contractors, private firms and nonprofits, the interdisciplinary certificate is beneficial for those looking to begin a career in homeland security or emergency management or advance in their careers – from a technical or professional role to a leadership position.
The 15-credit program includes courses that helps students hone the skills they need to prevent, prepare for and mitigate real-world crises. Started in 2010, SPEA IUPUI recognized the need to offer a certificate that addressed the common problems – such as information-sharing between state and local police – facing public safety agencies.
Students, who gain the credibility of being an Indiana University alum after graduating from the program, also have the option of earning the certificate by combining online and in-person courses.
Anyone with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is eligible to apply for the program. Students who successfully complete the certificate can also apply those credits toward the 36-credit Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Public Safety, offered by SPEA IUPUI. In addition, students with a 3.5 GPA after earning the certificate can apply for a waiver of the GRE requirement for the Master’s Degree.
SPEA is the only university in Indiana that offers graduate study in public safety. Graduates of the Master’s Degree are increasingly in demand among agencies, organizations and private companies seeking people with a practical and philosophical understanding of criminal justice and public safety.
The Master’s program also offers experiential learning and internship opportunities for those students seeking additional experience, plus a project-based capstone course in which students demonstrate the kind of knowledge required by state and local agencies.
