The Homeland Security Management Institute (HSMI) at Long Island University, the nation’s leading institution for graduate-level education in the Homeland Security Management field, offers a 15-credit graduate-level Advanced Certificate and a 36-credit Master of Science in Homeland Security Management degree. Both programs are delivered entirely in an asynchronous online format. Designated by Act of Congress (in the Implementing the Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Report Act of 2007) as a DHS National Transportation Security Center of Excellence, HSMI holds the distinction of being the only DHS Center of Excellence to offer a degree in the Homeland Security Management field. The Advanced Certificate and Master’s degree programs are fully registered with the New York State Education Department and fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
Both programs, delivered in a very flexible and asynchronous online learning format, are designed to accommodate the busy schedules of active professionals. Distance learning makes the Homeland Security Management program available to a more diverse cross-section of traditional students and practitioners from homeland security organizations and agencies across the nation, thus enhancing the quality of education by broadening the range of perspectives and experiences represented. Our rigorous and challenging curriculum is designed to meet the complex contemporary needs of managers and executives in Homeland Security, Homeland Defense, and Emergency Management specialties. To better address the wide range of All-Hazards threats presenting themselves to our nation’s transportation systems, HSMI recently developed several new courses, including Risk Management for Critical Infrastructure and Transportation Systems, Securing Transportation Networks, and The Planning Process in Homeland Security Management, which includes a particular focus on surface transportation security planning issues.
The Institute’s Senior Fellows are a faculty of highly experienced homeland security and emergency management practitioner-experts who hold doctoral degrees and other outstanding academic credentials. Several are Fulbright Scholars. They are particularly sensitive to the needs and objectives of busy homeland security professionals as well as to the needs and objectives of those aspiring to attain management careers in homeland security fields. They understand the practical challenges active homeland security professionals face in pursuing higher education, including unpredictable schedules and the struggle to balance complex professional and personal responsibilities.
The Institute’s Board of Advisors boasts the most influential names in homeland security and homeland defense, and members play an integral and ongoing advisory role in HSMI’s graduate programs. Several members of the Board of Advisors are among the Institute’s distinguished faculty of Senior Fellows, sharing their years of practical experience with students and professional colleagues.
