ICx Technologies Introduces the radHUNTER Radiation Detector

WASHINGTON — ICx Technologies (NASDAQ: ICXT), a developer of advanced sensor technologies for homeland security, force protection and commercial applications, announced today the release of the radHUNTER™, an extremely sensitive and accurate digital, hand-held, gamma radionuclideentification device (RIID). The radHUNTER is the culmination of more than eight years of development work on miniature, digital-signal processing electronics, utilizing operating-power conservation and advancements in the scintillation detector and the radionuclide template matchingentification algorithm. Development of the radHUNTER was supported in part by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), as part of the Human Portable Radiation Detection System (HPRDS) procurement program. Variations in normal operating conditions can affect the performance of RIIDs with scintillation detectors such as NaI and LaBr. Dramatic temperature variations can also affect the scintillation detector and/or the photo-multiplier tube (PMT), and can also cause instabilities and non-linearities in the electronics. In addition, high count-rates can impact the peak position in a spectrum. The radHUNTER’s instruments have been developed to correct all these circumstances through automatic calibration and continuous LED stabilization providing a high-performance instrument requiring little or no maintenance. The radHUNTER is designed for first responders, customs agents, and specialized security forces. It was ergonomically constructed for easy operation with hazmat gloves; it has a simple, two-button operation for menu navigation, and starts up immediately in “find andentify” mode. It can label isotopes as NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material), industrial, medical or Special Nuclear Material, and has corresponding alarms that indicate the severity of the threat – all delivered in just seconds.
