ILC Dover Develops a Flexible Radiation Shielding Material

Frederica, DE – Radiation shielding is a driving requirement for long duration space exploration missions.  ILC has been working with NASA over the past few years to develop multi-functional shielding approaches using our specialized ArmorFlex® materials.  ArmorFlex® provides excellent shielding against Galactic Cosmic Radiation and high-energy protons, but is less effective in stopping neutron radiation.  We have now developed a lightweight, flexible, borated polyethylene material to meet this need.  Through hybridization, this material will improve shielding for spacecraft but may also be useful in the design of protective equipment for the nuclear industry.

About ILC Dover Since 1947, ILC Dover has provided engineered solutions to complex customer problems, serving the aerospace, personal protection and pharmaceutical industries. Known for production of space suits for NASA, ILC is a world leader in the use of high-performance flexible materials, allowing for unique solutions to meet customer needs. ILC’s innovative products have been used on the moon, on Mars, and around the globe.
