WASHINGTON, D.C. - While the major wrath of the winter storm has passed, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to encourage all Americans to follow the instructions of state and local officials, and to listen to local radio and/or TV stations for updated emergency information.
"Even though this winter storm has passed, you should still be extremely careful because roads may be icy and cold temperatures are forecasted throughout the country for the remainder of the week," said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. "This storm serves as an important reminder that we should all be prepared for winter weather and other emergencies. Don't wait until the next storm. If you haven't already, visit www.ready.gov today and learn the few simple steps you and your family can take to be prepared."
FEMA, through its regional offices in Kansas City, Mo.; Denton, Texas; Chicago; Atlanta; Philadelphia; New York City and Boston, continues to closely monitor the aftermath of the storm, and continues to stand ready to assist if support is needed.
At the request of the respective states, FEMA representatives have been working with their state partners at various state Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs). At the height of the storm, personnel were deployed to EOCs in Arkansas, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin, but most have been demobilized at the request of the states.
The Governors of Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin have declared states of emergency which make available state government resources, such as personnel, equipment and facilities, to support and assist disaster response operations. Yesterday, the President announced a federal emergency declaration for all 77 counties in Oklahoma to supplement state and local response efforts in the area struck by the winter storm. This declaration frees up federal dollars to reimburse the state for some costs associated with efforts over the last few days.
Everyone should continue listening to their local news to monitor for severe weather updates and follow any directions from their local officials. This storm serves an important reminder to make sure your family preparedness plan and contacts are up to date and exercise your plan. Learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by your state and local government, and ensure your home and car are prepared for the winter weather. Visit www.ready.gov or www.listo.gov for more winter preparedness information, as well as additional information on staying safe during emergencies.
FEMA's mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
