JW Fishers Announces New Splash-Proof PC for Side Scan Sonars
The two major limitations of computer based side scan systems have been the inability to use the sonar from small, "wet" boats and the difficulty of viewing the PC monitor in bright sunlight. Fishers has solved these problems with the introduction of their new splash-proof computer with ultra bright display. The splash-proof iseal for small-boat operation where mist, spray, or rain are likely to get onto the computer. The ultra bright 10.4 inch display makes side scan images easy to see, even on a sunny day. The PC is built into a rugged waterproof case making it extremely durable and shock resistant. When the case is opened for operation, the control panel and display are sealed to protect them from moisture and all external cable connectors are o-ring sealed to prevent water intrusion. The computer has all the capability of a full size desktop including a 600MHz processor, 60GB hard drive, and 512MB of RAM. A waterproof keyboard and mouse are included with the PC. Side scans are one of the most effective tools for underwater search because they can "see" what’s on the bottom regardless of water clarity. Their popularity is the result of many factors including low cost, ease of operation, and the highly detailed images produced on either a computer or thermal printer. Large areas can be searched quickly as the sonar beam sweeps hundreds of feet on both sides of the boat. Side scan sonars work equally well in salt or fresh water, and can be used in lakes, rivers, harbors, and open ocean. These sonar systems are in wide use by law enforcement agencies, dive rescue groups, military units and a variety of other search operations. Law enforcement and dive rescue groups use side scans to search for bodies, vehicles lost in the water, capsized boats, and missing airplanes. Commercial diving and salvage companies employ the side scans to locate and track underwater pipelines, find lost propellers and dredge parts, search for sunken vessels, and a variety of other applications. Military units use these sonars to locate many of the same things, but also to locate mines and any explosive device that may be attached to a ship’s hull or underwater structure. Hydrographers often use side scans for the survey of tidal rivers and harbors to locate andentify debris in navigable waterways, and also to observe changes in the bottom topography caused by storm surge and excessive runoff. Professional treasure hunters, and even recreational divers, are also using the sonars to find both modern day and centuries old shipwrecks.
