L-3 Security & Detection Systems Receives TSA Certification for eXaminer XLB

WOBURN, Mass. – L-3 Security & Detection Systems announced today its eXaminer XLB high-performance explosives detection system (EDS) has been certified by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Designed as a high-speed in-line system, the eXaminer XLB is the first certified system to meet the industry’s high-speed EDS ification.

“With TSA certification of the XLB, L-3 can offer airports the choice of three certified systems in the eXaminer family (SX, 3DX, XLB) across the reduced size, medium and high speed categories,” said Thomas M. Ripp, president of L-3 Security & Detection Systems. “By delivering a configurable, networkable family of screening systems that maximize detection while lowering the cost of ownership, we are working to ensure that airports of every size can deploy the optimal system for their unique operating requirements.”

The certification of the eXaminer XLB represents another key milestone in the partnership between L-3 and Analogic that has spanned over 10 years. Sales, integration and maintenance support services are provided by L-3 and the system is designed and manufactured by Analogic.

The eXaminer XLB features a meter-wide tunnel and generates high-resolution 3-D image data for explosives detection by combining helical CT with dual-energy imaging. Using 3-D Continuous Flow CT technology, the XLB generates high-resolution color images in real time. With advanced tools that include 360-degree rotational views of entire bags and individual threat objects, operators can quickly and confidently clear bags for flight or designate bags for search.

Since 1998, L-3 has used medical-grade imaging technology developed for aviation security with an understanding of the complex demands faced by airport personnel and regulatory agencies around the globe. Over 900 eXaminer systems are deployed at airports domestically and internationally and supported by L-3’s world- service organization.
