VIENNA, Va. –– Memex, Inc., the leading worldwide provider of intelligence management, data integration, search and analysis solutions, today announced a new agreement with the Mountain Empire Criminal Justice Information Network (MECJIN) in Virginia. The contract calls for the deployment of Memex software and services, giving the 15 southwest Virginia counties and 50 municipalities in the MECJIN an intelligence system for crime analysis and data sharing. MECJIN is a multi-jurisdictional computer network that links law enforcement agencies in the Appalachian Mountain area of Virginia. “The goal of our upgrade is to improve public safety and the interconnectedness of our law enforcement community,” said William Puckett, the Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety with Richlands Police Department, and the Chairman of MECJIN. “We’ve used Memex for years, and it was an easy decision to upgrade and install the new Memex platform.” The Memex platform enables MECJIN law enforcement officers to correlate Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) from a wide region using various Memex tools. This upgrade is also in compliance with the N-DEX (National Data Exchange) data sharing initiative, setting the foundation for the sharing of incident data within MEJCIN from the many regional and municipal systems, such as Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Record Management Systems (RMS). Functionality includes visualization and mapping tools, intelligence management, analysis of suspicious activity reports, and correlation of data to expose organized criminal activity. While MECJIN is planning to use the new capabilities to fight gangs and narcotics, it will also target other criminal activities with the Memex platform as well. For instance, MECJIN will be able to search across maps to do trend analysis of crimes and incidents on the Memex platform. The system creates aggregate reporting on suspicious activities that makes crime reporting easier and facilitates better decisions on allocating resources in remote areas. This reduces costs, improves safety, and sets the stage for solving crimes earlier. The system also enhances investigative capacity, threat assessment and counterterrorism work. “Memex will allow MECJIN to link incident data with suspicious activity data and intelligence data, and then analyze and visualize it through a single source portal,” said Neil Schlisserman, VP of Americas for Memex. “This becomes a key part of crime prevention and solving cases for the region.” MECJIN received federal grants from the Edward Byrne Memorial Formula Grant Program and the Homeland Security Grant Program for the deployment of Memex software and services.
