HAWTHORNE, Calif. - OSI Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:OSIS) announced today that its security division, Rapiscan Systems, has received a contract for approximately $9.1 million from an undisclosed U.S. government agency to provide multiple Rapiscan Secure 1000 personnel screeners and Rapiscan GaRDS mobile cargo inspection systems. The systems will be used to screen people, passenger vehicles, trucks and cargo containers for explosive materials and other contraband.
President of Rapiscan Systems, Mr. Ajay Mehra, stated, "This order for both personnel screening and cargo screening systems illustrates our ability to offer a complete suite of security technologies. Complex security applications require more than a single technology. We believe that our product range offers our customers an unparalleled opportunity to design a flexible and robust solution that fits their needs. We intend to utilize our newly expanded Mississippi manufacturing facility to help fulfill this order."
Rapiscan Systems' Secure 1000 personnel screener, a non-intrusive system designed to detect metallic and nonmetallic threat objects, is based on Rapiscan's patented backscatter X-ray technology. The unit enables security personnel to detect ceramic, plastic, metallic, organic and other contraband or security threats. It also provides a comprehensive body search in seconds, eliminating the need for intrusive and less-effective hands-on body searches by security personnel.
The Rapiscan GaRDS product line provides reliable imaging of cargo and vehicles to detect hidden contraband, including weapons, explosives, drugs, undeclared goods and weapons of mass destruction. The systems have an intrinsically lower radiation field when compared to equivalent X-ray systems. They require a smaller operational area and exclusion safety zone than other inspection systems.
