Saflink Chip Technology Meets Highest-Level U.S. and Canadian Government Standards for Cryptographic Technology
KIRKLAND, WA – (August 15, 2006) Saflink® Corporation(NASDAQ:SFLK), a leading provider of solutions that verifyentity, secure access and increase productivity, today announced that the Saflink cryptographic module, a single-chip cryptographic device used in the company’s authentication products, has been certified as meeting the U.S. and Canadian Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 requirements for protecting sensitive information. In testing by an approved, independent laboratory, the Saflink cryptographic module earned Level 4 certification for physical security. Level 4 is the highest possible ification.
“We’re extremely proud of the way our technology performed in the face of such rigorous, independent testing,” said Joe Havrilla, Vice President, Embedded Systems of Saflink. “This is an important achievement that not only provides us with a seal of approval for government purchasers, but one that should also give both our government and commercial customers added confidence that Saflink’s technology is up to the challenge of protecting even the most sensitive information. We believe our chip technology can be a strong differentiator for any smart card provider who is pursuing HSPD-12, TWIC or similar opportunities.”
FIPS 140-2 is a standard developed by the Cryptographic Module Validation Authorities — the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) and the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) of Canada — as part of the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP). CMVP aims to encourage the use of validated cryptographic technology in government agencies. The standard provides specific requirements for cryptographic modules used in security systems that protect sensitive information in computer and telecommunications systems. In addition to promoting a higher level of security for sensitive information, FIPS 140-2 provides government IT purchasers with a metric for evaluating products that include cryptographic modules.
Saflink earned FIPS 140-2 validation through an independent, CMVP-accredited lab for cryptographic module compliance testing. In addition to earning Level 4 rating for physical security, Saflink received a Level 3 rating in the other ten categories evaluated. Overall, the Saflink cryptographic module earned a Level 3 ification.
Saflink is currently shipping three products that include the FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certified cryptographic module: 1) a smart card that is ISO 7816 compatible; 2) a USB cryptographic key; and 3) a SOIC-24 integrated circuit suitable for embedding in other cryptographic devices.
