August 2005 – Scott Health & Safety, part of Tyco Fire & Security, has addressed the growing needs of first responders and first receivers with the introduction of the Proflow 3 Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) – the latest addition to its full line of air purifying products.
The new Scott Proflow 3 PAPR is specifically designed for use in non-IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) environments that require air-purified respiratory protection for extended durations or during physical exertion, such as the extraction of victims and decontamination.
The Proflow 3 employs a state-of-the-art “intelligent power” microprocessor to constantly manage and adjust airflow to the user ensuring adequate, easy-to-breathe air. This unique airflow management system ensures comfortable airflow to the users by automatically compensating for changes in resistance. The unit “speeds up” or increases air flow output when a user’s breathing rate increases or when the filter becomes “loaded” with enough particulates to cause an increase in breathing resistance. An added benefit of this managed airflow is clear vision through the facepiece since lens fogging, sometimes experienced with full facepiece air purifying respirators. Users are also kept cooler during strenuous activity because of the constant, even flow of air through the facepiece.
Innovation in the Proflow 3 is designed from the inside out. From the internal, reduced-weight NiMH battery, to the rugged construction of its outer shell, Scott has designed the Proflow 3 as the most reliable and easy-to-use PAPR available today. Its sealed casing is resistant to high heat, impact, chemical exposure and electrical sparks, making the Proflow 3eal for use in a multitude of emergency situations under strenuous conditions. Its ergonomically, well-balanced design conveniently places the unit on the user’s lower back, reducing user strain and out of the way of operations. The EPDM corrugated breathing tube that connects the unit to the facepiece is temperature, abrasion and chemical resistant, and is easily removed for cleaning and decontamination assuring long product life and reliable performance. Further protecting the user are audible alerts for low battery or flow rate and a shielded waterproof on/off switch preventing accidental shutoff.
The Proflow 3 offers one of the highest flow rates in the industry through its three filters which are positioned upside down to protect them from possible contamination and provide virtually waterproof use for shower-friendly operation. The battery, which will last throughout an eight-hour workday, is simple to recharge using a plug-in cable without removal from the unit. The Proflow 3 has a built-in protection that allows it to remain connected to the charger until it is ready to use.
Because the Proflow 3 has been designed based on Scott’s Top-Down Convertibility concept (which allows wearers to use one Scott facepiece for all their respiratory needs), it is NIOSH-approved for use with various Scott facepieces including the AV-2000 and AV-3000 full facepieces, the M98 and M95 gas masks, the Promask and Weld-O-Vista facepiece. In addition, using the Proflow 3 with Scott’s Butyl Hood iseal for healthcare first receivers because it does not require fit testing and is usable by those with spectacles or facial hair.
While the Scott Proflow 3 is aneal choice for first responders and receivers, other applications and users include militaries, industrial workers, and police departments that have a potential exposure to respiratory hazards for extended periods.
The new Scott Proflow 3 powered air purifying respirator is available throughout North and South America through local Scott Health & Safety Authorized Distributors.
