Bruker Daltonics has developed a highly effective method for detection and quantitation of melamine and related compounds utilizing its easy to use, high performance Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer-the HCTultra. This LC-MSMS method is superior to older GC-MS methods that required extensive sample preparation and indirect detection utilizing derivatized analytes. The current method provides:
- Excellent Low ppb Sensitivity-superior to even Triple Quad MS Methods
- Ppb-ppm Quantitation Range
- Minimal Sample Preparation
- Direct Detection of Melamine and Its Degradation Product
- No Derivatization Required
- Simple Gradient Chromatography Separation
- Quick Analysis-less than 5 minute Chromatography Run
There is a requirement for a fast and accurate analytical method capable of detecting melamine in various matrixes at concentrations determined by the regulatory authorities. Given the numerous recent incidents of product contamination involving melamine, the Food and Drug Administration has set a limit of 1 ppm for melamine in infant formula and 2.5 ppm for other foods. This method is more than capable of delivering the performance required for effective melamine detection and screening of products for contamination.
