Smiths Detection Introduces People Screeners for Prison Security Checkpoints

Morristown, NJ – Smiths Detection today introduces its B-SCAN X-ray people scanning series for U.S. prison and other security checkpoint screening applications. The scanners provide advanced security to locate threats and contraband concealed in body cavities, artificial limbs or on a person.

Jim Viscardi, Vice President of Global Sales, Smiths Detection, said: “Adding this layer of screening technology will help reduce the smuggling of narcotics, guns, knives, cell phones and other contraband into prisons. Our new B-SCAN series offers several configurations for both prison and general security screening to meet varying customer requirements.”

In a non-intrusive single pass, using a smaller dose than backscatter X-ray, the B-SCAN provides a high-resolution, head-to-toes image of the person in less than seven seconds. Imaging enhancement tools then provide the operator with information to quickly and accurately evaluate the image for concealed objects, including inside body cavities.

Viscardi added: “We currently have more than 100 B-SCAN systems deployed around the world in a variety of applications such as prisons, airports and customs checkpoints. They are also being used in mines and refineries to stop employee theft of diamonds, gems and precious metals.”
