For Immediate ReleaseOffice of the Press SecretaryMay 26, 2006
I am pleased that the Senate completed work yesterday to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill. Our borders represent an enormous security challenge -- as well as a vital economic lifeline -- protecting both will result in a secure and prosperous future for our nation.
We must continue to look at all aspects of our nation’s immigration system, including deterrence, detection, apprehension, detention, and removal. We must also address these challenges in a targeted and effective way. Comprehensive immigration reform legislation should ultimately include enhanced border security, more robust interior enforcement, and an effective temporary worker program that does not provide amnesty, but matches willing foreign workers with willing American employers.
I look forward to working with both the House and Senate to implement additional necessary reforms that will prevent illegal crossings at our borders, end the practice of “catch and release” once and for all, and dramatically strengthen employer compliance and worksite enforcement according to our laws.
