TEDCO, TCM and Indian Head Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center to Showcase More Than 20 Technologies Available for Commercialization

INDIAN HEAD, Md.  – The Indian Head Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (IHDIV, NSWC), a U.S. Department of Defense Center for Energetics, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) and the Tech Council of Maryland (TCM) will jointly host “Navy Innovation for Commercial Development” at the Village Green Pavilion, Indian Head, Maryland on June 1. This technology transfer and federal marketplace event, which is being held from  8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will highlight 23 novel technologies created in the research laboratories at IHDIV, NSWC. These innovations are available for further development, licensing or commercialization by local companies and entrepreneurs. The event is also sponsored by the All Hazards Consortium and the Federal Laboratory Consortium, Mid-Atlantic Region. “The goal of this showcase is to demonstrate that our technologies are designed not only to serve the Navy’s needs, but also to present real commercial opportunities for the business sector,” said Dr. J. Scott Deiter, director of technology transfer office at IHDIV, NSWC. “We are looking forward to developing new business connections that can facilitate the transfer of these technologies into the marketplace.” During the showcase, researchers from IHDIV, NSWC will present available research, cooperative agreements and licensing opportunities. Attendees will also learn how Baltimore Shipping Technologies took advantage of IHDIV, NSWC innovations by licensing, then securing a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) for the Joint Modular Intermodal Container Technology (JMIC), a versatile, reusable shipping pallet-container hybrid originally developed for the U.S. Navy. Attendees will also see demonstrations of developed technologies and receive information about unique facilities that are available to the private sector. This includes the Sigmund Jacobs Detonation Science Facility, a state-of-the-art complex in which destructive and nondestructive tests and analysis for chemicals, propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics are conducted. “TEDCO is pleased to have the opportunity to work with IHDIV, NSWC and its researchers to bring more technologies being created in the labs out in to the marketplace,” said  Renee Winsky, interim executive director at TEDCO. “This showcase provides a targeted networking opportunity for entrepreneurs to find new technologies that will grow their businesses in the state.” The showcase will feature presentations, displays and exhibits that illustrate the broad range of cutting-edge engineering solutions developed in IHDIV, NSWC research labs, which help keep the U.S. Navy the most advanced naval force in the world.  Technologies to be highlighted as developmental, licensing or commercialization opportunities include:
  • A battery-operated buoy system that can be equipped with sensors to monitor temperature and chemical changes, or detection equipment to help protect docks or marinas.
  • The Common Modular Intermodal Shipping System Technology (C-MISST), a revolutionary new shipping system that consists of modular, stackable and collapsible pallet platforms.
  • A self-contained, live-fire training aid designed to sense and react to motion by delivering non-lethal rounds until the subject is disabled.
  • A security gate access technology that uses integrated facial verification biometrics and a radio frequencyentification device (RFID) to enhance driver and vehicleentification, while maintaining smooth traffic flow.
 “This forum is a great way for the researchers at IHDIV, NSWC to share their innovative technologies with regional entrepreneurs,” said Julie Coons, president of  TCM. “We expect that the business leaders in attendance will be very interested in the commercial applications of these technologies.” An optional  TEDCO funding briefing will be held from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. during which  TEDCO officials will provide information on state and federal funding programs that support technology transfer projects.
