Thales First Responder Multiband Radio Approved for Purchase by U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI)

CLARKSBURG, Md. – Thales Communications, Inc. announces that its Liberty Multiband Land Mobile Radio (LMR) has been approved for purchase by the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) under contract number GS-TFMG-BPA-09-0012. It is available to participating agencies and bureaus, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Forest Service, Geologic Service, Department of Agriculture, and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services.

The Liberty radio has received Tiers 1, 2, and 3 approval from the DOI Radio Technical Service Center (TSC) test lab. Upon further testing and approval, the fire and law enforcement tiers will be available as a free software upgrade to anyone who purchases a Tier 1, 2, or 3 radio. Encryption (including Project 25 DES and AES) and Over-the-Air Rekey (OTAR) will also be available for purchase.

Introduced in early 2008, the Liberty radio was the first FCC-approved multiband radio covering the entire public safety spectrum (136-174, 380-520, 700, and 800 MHz), linking government agencies and first responders with a single portable radio. It works on current analog systems as well as Project 25 conventional and trunked systems, regardless of frequency range. The radio is size, weight, and performance comparable to existing single-band portable LMRs and eliminates the requirement to carry multiple radios to cover fragmented frequency bands. The radio is rugged, submersible to two meters, and has undergone extensive field testing.

“This technology is very important to our DOI customers, especially those who need to communicate with their surrounding fire and law enforcement agencies with a cost-effective interoperability solution,” said Michael Sheehan, President and CEO of Thales Communications, Inc. “Further, this is a solution that works right out of the box.”

The Liberty radio product line (radio and full complement of accessories) is manufactured at Thales’s Clarksburg, Maryland, facilities. For non-DOI customers, the radio is available for purchase through the GSA Schedule. For more information, visit www.thalesliberty.com.
