The George Washington University Announces Masters of Professional Studies and Graduate Certificates in Security and Safety Leadership

The College of Professional Studies, in partnership with the Center for Excellence in Public Leadership at GW, is offering a Master of Professional Studies degree in Security and Safety Leadership concentration (SSL). This part-time program is designed to meet the professional development needs of individuals who are involved in the public or private safety sectors and have experience in law enforcement, emergency management, corporate security, transportation security, fire service, public safety, public health preparedness, or the military. The main objective of the Security and Safety Leadership program is to contribute to the professional development of safety professionals by analyzing a wide range of homeland security issues, policies, and practices. Students in this degree program will develop competencies and knowledge relating to:

  •     Homeland Security strategy and policy development
  •     Regional security issues
  •     Emergency response
  •     Inter-agency cooperation
  •     Leadership and performance management
  •     Managing organizational change
  •     Intelligence and strategic analysis

For those students wishing to pursue a shorter course of study and to focus on a specific area of security and safety leadership, we offer two graduate certificates within the program: Fundamentals of Strategic Security and Safety Leadership. Students may apply to one graduate certificate only. However, qualified candidates can apply successfully completed graduate certificate credits towards the master’s degree. Program At A Glance The part-time master’s program offers evening es one or two nights per week. On this schedule, students complete three courses per term.

  •    12 courses, 36 credit hours, including capstone course
  •    COHORT format
  •    Complete master’s degree in about 16 months
  •    Blended delivery combines room instruction with online delivery via          Blackboard, GW’s web-based educational platform

The part-time graduate certificates program offers evening es one or two nights per week. On this schedule, students complete three courses per term.

  •    Each certificate is 6 courses, 18 credit hours
  •    Qualified candidates may apply successfully completed credits towards a    Master of Professional Studies in Security and Safety Leadership
  •    Earn a graduate certificate in 8 months
  •    Blended delivery combines room instruction with online delivery via     Blackboard, GW's web-based educational platform
