OAKWOOD VILLAGE, Ohio – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced that law enforcement officials in Washington, D.C successfully field tested its Thermo Scientific Mobile Advanced Radioisotopeentification System (ARIS). A police official on location noted how effectively the system can interdict security threats such as dirty bombs, even in crowded conditions with fast-moving traffic.
D.C. police official says Mobile ARIS is a “strong defender” of public’s health and safety “The Mobile ARIS takes any guesswork out ofentifying radiation threats, performing this critical function automatically and instantly,” noted a Washington D.C. police official in whose jurisdiction Thermo Fisher tested the system. “This is the kind of system our homeland security forces urgently need. A radiological terrorist incident in the heart of our city or near one of our most valued landmarks is an ever-present danger. The Mobile ARIS is a strong defender of the public’s and the nation’s health and safety.”
Superior effectiveness of the Mobile ARIS
The Mobile ARIS, manufactured in Oakwood Village, Ohio, demonstrated superior effectiveness in enabling homeland security and law enforcement personnel to quicklyentify, locate and interdict threat radiation sources. Key features of the system include its simplicity of operation and automated detection capability, adaptability to land-, airborne- and water-based monitoring systems, and instant, usable data reporting.
The Mobile ARIS is a smarter detection system Jim Monde, director, business development and homeland security for RM&SI, noted, “The Mobile ARIS is smarter, faster and more flexible than other systems in interdicting threats. It can, for example, detect a radiological dispersal device, or dirty bomb, that is hidden in a moving vehicle that is traveling through a tunnel toward a major U.S. city, giving security forces the time needed to take quick, decisive action. This is a vital and critical advantage in preventing a terrorist attack whether it occurs in the heart of the nation’s capital or at a huge sporting event on the west coast. The Mobile ARIS is positioned to become the preferred mobile radiation detection technology. The system also ensures that the data that is captured is complete and in a form ready for use during investigation and potential prosecution.”
The Mobile ARIS is a modular system adaptable to either mobile (SUV, van, golf cart, boat) or stationary operation and is almost three-times lighter than similar commercially available systems. It can quickly be transferred to an alternative vehicle if necessary and the system requires minimal power, only a connection to an automotive cigarette lighter. By utilizing the vehicle’s existing factory supplied specification, the Mobile ARIS system eliminates the requirement for extra batteries or additional vehicle charging system for power. Initial system startup takes less than five minutes.
In addition, the Thermo Scientific ViewPoint Rad Reachback management application can be easily integrated with the Mobile ARIS to provide continuous, real-time data communications from the mobile unit to a command center or expert analysis facility, or it can provide a “breadcrumb trail” of data points for next-level response personnel. This allows Mobile ARIS vehicle operators to benefit from technical analysis that is provided by experts viewing data acquired in real time, and it also facilitates response coordination of multiple vehicles, response teams and agencies as the situation dictates.
“Our global security customers told us they need a system that combines the detection andentification sensitivity of a fixed portal monitor in a mobile package that provides both mapping and reach-back,” stated Adam Grose, VP/GM of the RMSI business. “Given the success of the product thus far, we feel the Mobile ARIS is the best solution available anywhere in the world.”
