WALTHAM, MA Thermo Electron Corporation [NYSE:TMO] today unveiled ViewPointTM, a next generation remote monitoring software platform that provides real-time personnel and area monitoring during routine and outage operations in the nuclear power industry. Also for use in environmental, industrial, civil defense, and security monitoring applications, the ViewPoint system provides the user the ability to centrally process and analyze instrument/detector data and integrate detectors from Thermo Electrons portfolio as well as third-party vendors. ViewPoint enables increased efficiency and optimization of operational management by integrating personnel, area, and process monitoring for radiation data into a single application.
What makes this new remote monitoring software platform unique is that it allows customers to incrementally add on to the existing system, providing a platform that can continually be updated as the users needs evolve. Users can also supplement existing inventory with new Thermo Electron products to achieve desired functionality while also offering a modular design that allows the platform to be tailored to customers needs. This user-friendly, highly customizable and scalable system is also built on Thermo Electrons proven robust and rugged wireless network.
While there are many devices on the market that can effectively measure radiation in the environment, there are relatively few systems that are robust enough to provide an adequate platform that can centralize these devices from a host of vendors, said Greg Wortman, Director of Marketing for Thermos Radiation, Measurement and Protection Business Unit. We continue to leverage todays most advanced technology to provide our customers with value and safety driven solutions. Our ability to integrate customer input with application knowledge of the market resulted in the development of a product that provides unparalleled value propositions and future upgrade capability.
Phase I of the ViewPoint launch focuses on the integration of radiation capabilities. The Thermo ViewPoint System provides two-way communication capability with Thermo Electrons Electronic Personal Dosimeter units (EPD), the most technologically advanced dosimeter and the ability to interface with third party electronic dosimeters; Portable Radiation Survey Meters from Thermo and third party vendors. GPS capability has also been integrated into ViewPoint which enables real-time data and location tracking. Additional devices are being added on an on-going basis.
The ViewPoint system is comprised of four main components:
- ViewPoint Appliance: The ViewPoint Appliance is an industrial computer processor unit that delivers all of the power, flexibility and ruggedness on an industrial PC, in a small, stylish form, approximately one-third the size of a standard PC. The appliance provides plug-and-play capabilities, while providing additional system backup functionality and reliability.
- User Workstations: The ViewPoint application client has been designed to accommodate from one to more than one thousand concurrent user(s)/workstation(s). ViewPoint has been developed with smart capability that regulates the total number of concurrent workstations, based on the approved number of license bundles purchased.
- Plug-Ins: Each instrument, detector or sensor, which is capable of being remotely monitored by ViewPoint, has a unique Input Device Plug-In that allows the instrument to communicate with ViewPoint Data Engine/System.
- Client Plug-Ins: The ViewPoint User Interface and Data Engine are compatible with third-party remote monitoring software systems. All purchased plug-ins are pre-loaded on the ViewPoint Appliance prior to delivery. Additional input device plug-ins, client plug-ins, and users/workstation license bundles can be purchased and added to the original ViewPoint appliance via a patch file and updated security key.
Unlike other systems that require considerable engineering and labor to commission and maintain, the Viewpoint System provides efficiency and optimization of operational management by integrating personnel along with area, process and environmental monitoring. Additionally, the scalable design provides users with the freedom to create a system for their needs today with seamless expansion capabilities for optimum operation well into the future.
