WASHINGTON – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced the purchase of additional Reduced Size Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) that provide streamlined screening capabilities and enhanced security for checked baggage systems at U.S. airports.

TSA screens 100 percent of checked and carry-on baggage for dangerous items including explosives. EDS units are automated systems that scan checked baggage and analyze the contents to determine whether explosive threats might be present. The automated systems streamline the checked baggage screening process at airports nationwide. For this purchase, contracts were awarded to Reveal Imaging Technologies, Inc. and L-3 Communication Security & Detection Systems, Inc.

"This state-of-the-art technology greatly enhances both the security and efficiency of checked baggage screening and I am pleased to see more units headed to U.S. airports," said TSA Assistant Administrator for Security Capabilities Robin Kane. "We look forward to continuing to use the best available technologies and providing the highest level of security for travelers."

The Reduced Size EDS units are specifically designed for use at small to medium-sized airports and TSA has deployed more than 450 Reduced Size EDS units to airports nationwide.

This contract award will strengthen security by increasing the capabilities of checked baggage screening at U.S. airports. Additionally, older systems at the end of their useful lifecycle will be upgraded with these more efficient, automated systems.
